A form is any document where someone types information into the empty blanks. Forms are used for requests for information, electronic guest books, online ordering, applications, and information gathering.
Examples Of Forms
Situation: You want to create a database of names and email addresses of people who visit your website.
Solution: Save the contents of a form into a data file. This file resides on your personal directory on Labnet's web server. You can then import the data file into your database software.
Situation: You want to e-mail a thank you note to everyone who takes the time to fill out your feedback form.
Solution: Create an html form that, among other things, ask for the users e-mail address. Labnet's mail server processes the form, and a return message is immediately sent to the recipient's mailbox.
Some Advanced Uses
Situation: You have a team of sales representatives based in remote locations and you want them to report their expense information each week.
Solution: Create a form for data entry, which collects data information online through your web site. The information is saved to a data file in your Labnet directory, which you can import into a spreadsheet for further processing.
Situation: You've been collecting addresses for a mailing list through your web, but many people mistype a part of their address.
Solution: First create a form that the user fills-out completely. Then that data is showed to the user, and asked to verify everything is correct. This "slight of hand" actually involves using two forms, one to get the data, and another that saves the corrected information.
How Forms Work On Labnet
The actual form is an HTML document, which can be written by you, and modified at your leisure. The form collects the data. You decide exactly what questions to ask. Then, Labnet has a special program that processes that data, and does certain things with it. It can e-mail the data to you, which is what the Labnet Guestbook Wizard does. Or, the data can be saved in your directory as a data file, in comma delimited text. This standard data format can be imported into a spreadsheet or database for your processing.
